French Breakfast Puffs

I have been making these DELICIOUS French Breakfast Puffs for YEARS! My family just LOVES them! The other day while chatting with Paula over at "Summ Day, Summ Way" and she asked me if I would post the recipe so here you go, Paula.....this one's for YOU!

For this recipe, you will need:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

Lightly grease 12 muffin cups; set aside. Stir together flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg; set aside. In mixer bowl, cream together 1/2 cup sgar, the shortening, and egg. Add flour mixture and milk alternately to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition.

Fill prepared muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake in 350*F oven for 20-25 minutes, or till golden. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and the cinnamon. Remove muffins from oven; immediately dip in melted butter or margarine, then in cinnamon-sugar mixture till coated. Serve warm and ENJOY!!

Yield: 112 muffins
OMGosh....that should read 12 muffins NOT 112 ROFLOL!!

365 Ways.............


Thursdays challenge in the "365 Ways To Say I Love You" was to wear a ribbon around your finger and when he asks why-say it's so you won't forget to tell him how much you need him."

Well, I didn't have ANY ribbon in my house so I had to be a little resourceful. I did, however, have chocolate Lindt Truffles at my disposal. Hey, doesn't everybody? So, I paper clipped one to my sweatshirt. He didn't notice. :> ( So, I taped a blue one to the red one.....nothing. I finally had to stand in front of him and say, "Aren't you going to ask me WHY I have 2 chocolate truffles hanging on my sweatshirt?"

He looked at me....laughed, and said, "I didn't DARE ask!" Then he said, "Darling.....why do you have those "things" hanging from your chest?"

OMGosh! I about died! ROFLOL! ROFLOL! ROFLOL! "Oh, you mean the truffles?" lol "I put them there to remind me to tell you how much I need you!" (insert awwww and smooches here!)

Never a dull moment here on the farm!

The Blame Game

Looking for someone else to blame when things go wrong in life is something we do often to escape from being held accountable. Do you blame others for the foolish things you do and for your bad choices? Do you point the finger and say, "If they hadn't been so . . . . or If they weren't here then. . . . I wouldn't have . . .?"

Whether it is our friendships, marriage, or homeschooling, God holds everyone of us accountable to faithfully obey Him in what He has commanded us to do. Blaming others is really trying to hide our own failings from God. The blame game first started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, but we don't have to keep playing it in our home. We need to confess our sin instead of trying to "pass the buck" and be healed!

"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)


Father,

Thank You for Your forgiveness that You freely give to me. Help me to acknowledge that the fault lies with me when I sin and not others. Please help me to keep my heart clean before You. In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Something Special For My Skippy Man

Why is there a picture of heart shaped grilled cheese sandwiches, you ask? Well.......I have been joining in on the fun with some sweet friends and Chili Pepper over at her blog, "365 Ways To Say I Love You". Each day we are challenged to show our WONDERFUL HUSBANDS just how much we love and care for them in some fun and/or thought provoking ways.

In one post, we were to bake him a cake in the shape of a heart, or we could come up with something else to make if the cake wasn't an option. So, I decided to make "I LOVE MY SKIPPY MAN" grilled cheese sandwiches, hence the little heart shaped sandwiches! :> )

I am having such a good time participating with the girls and Skippy is just "FEELIN' THE LOOOOVE!"

Mmmmmm!

At my precious Skippy's request, I made these Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin Cookies for him. He found the recipe, believe it or not, on the underside of the oatmeal container lid. What ever made him look there is beyond me. lol

So, here they are, in all there DELICIOUSNESS!

For this recipe, you will need:

1/2 pound (2 sticks) margarine or butter, softened
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon (I added a pinch more)
1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
3 cups quick or old fashioned, uncooked oats
1 cup raisins

1. Heat oven to 350*F
2. Beat together margarine and sugars until creamy
3. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well
4. Add combined flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; mix well
5. Stir in oats and raisins; mix well
6. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet
7. Bake 10 - 12 minutes or until golden brown
8. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire rack
9. ENJOY!!

Yields approximately 4 dozen (this will vary depending on size of dough used)

Bar Cookies: Bake 30 - 35 minutes in ungreased 13 x 9-inch metal baking pan

The Long Haul

Faithfulness can be described as being true to one's word, promises, or vows. God's Word provides many examples of people who remained faithful to the Lord in their work or call; but God Himself is perhaps the best definition of this character quality. As creator God, faithfulness is an attribute of His very nature. He demonstrates that attribute each day as He lovingly cares for us and meets our needs. The Bible describes God's faithfulness as infinite (Psalms 36:5) and everlasting (Psalms 119:90). Every morning, the Lord's faithfulness is new (Lamentations 3:23) and unfailing (Psalms 89:33). Even when we fail to be faithful to God, He remains faithful to us (2 Timothy 2:13).

Faithfulness is a character quality not easily found today. Christians in general, approach too many commitments with the option of, "Well, if this doesn't work, I can always get out." When life gets tough, we are tempted to escape from our responsibilities; but faithfulness means not forgetting the Lord in the good times, and not blaming Him in the bad. No matter where we go, we will have difficulties of some kind. What about you? Are you in your journey with Christ for the long haul?

Father,

Only You can give me the strength I need to remain faithful to You. Fill me again this day with Your power and help me remain true to You and the commitment I have made to my husband and my children.

Awwwwwww.......Ain't He Sweet?

SKIPPY: "There is one thing you can do for me, sweetie....sit down and relax for a change! I LOVE YOU TOO!"

Cookies Anyone?

I have a cookie recipe that I use for just about all of my cookies. It is so simple and easy to make.

On Saturday, I made a double batch, divided it up, and made 5 different cookie doughs from this one recipe.

I made:

white chocolate cranberry (OMGoodness!!), cinnamon oatmeal, chocolate chip, chocolate, and peanut butter (in center).

At the last minute, I decided to take a scoop of the chocolate and one of the peanut butter, and put them together. That would be the two toned cookie.

For this recipe you will need:

2 sticks butter or margarine
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350*. Combine dry ingredients in a small bowl and put aside. Cream butter, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Add dry ingredients to the butter/sugar mixture.

At this point, you can now add whatever you would like. Use your imagination!

Bake for 10-12 minutes on lightly greased cookie sheet. After one minute, remove to cooling rack.

This is my first post in the "Celebrate Friendship" meme, and I couldn't think of anyone that is more deserving of this than my sweet, God loving, adorable, one who has the most contagious laugh, precious, tenderhearted, kind, caring, FUNNY, encouraging, makes me laugh so hard I can't breath friend, RENEE!

I can't tell you when we met or whether it was on HSB or The Homeschool Lounge. I guess that's because from the moment I met Renee, we just clicked. She is an amazing lady. How often do you meet someone and it feels like you have known them forever, and that they have ALWAYS been part of your life? That's how I feel about my friendship with Renee, affectionately called, Goober! :> )

She has been there for me in good times and in bad. She has encouraged me when I have expressed my concerns about not being sure I should be homeschooling. She makes me laugh with her stories and continues to show me by her words and her actions, what a WONDERFUL wife and mother she is.

I thank God for giving me such an amazing friend who adds nothing but joy and happiness into my life.

A New Study

This morning I am meeting with my Bible Study group. What an amazing group of Godly women. I get so fired up for the Holy Spirit around these ladies. It is hard not to be!

Today we are starting a new study; "Anointed, Transformed, and Redeemed - A Story of David." I am sooooo excited! This study is done by Beth Moore, Kay Arthur, and Priscilla Shirer. These three women alone are wonderful, but together, they are AWESOME!

Warm & Toasty

I was so cold last night for some reason, that I decided to sleep in the family room on the couch so I could be closer to the wood stove. I had all intentions of keeping the fire going but apparently I was more tired than I had realized.

I normally get up about 5 times during the night and then again at 2:30 so I can get Skippy's lunch ready and make him breakfast before he goes to work. But this morning, I didn't even hear the alarms go off or even hear him walking around the house. My wonderful Skippy Man let me sleep in.

Awww.....Aint' He Sweet?


Well, this morning when Kiddo got up, the stove was out and it was a bit cool in the house. This how he found me:

Most days I wake up, this is what I look like. However, I am usually up and Kiddo is asleep. Not this morning! And even though the fire was out, I was WARM & TOASTY!

Today, I had a request from Renee to put up my homemade laundry detergent post. Why? Because she didn't want to have to look for the recipe! lol

Here you go, my friend.....THIS ONE'S FOR YOU! :> )

When we decided to homeschool, I knew I had to find ways to help us live a more frugal lifestyle, now that we were going back to one income. Not only that, I just LOVE things that are home made, no matter what it is. (unless they are dust bunnies) My kids have always known that I have a very hard time spending money, but when I started making the detergent, they thought I had gone "CRAZY!" We have been making and using this recipe for 2 years now. I just love it and I don't thing I will ever go back to store bought.
So, here are the directions.......and with pictures too! :> ) I am a "visual" person and need to see how things are done. I have a hard time reading directions sometimes, so when we first made this, I had my husband read the directions and do it with me. For some reason, I can read the same directions, book passage, scripture verse, etc., and get something out of it completely different than you. So, the last time I made the detergent, I decided to take pictures in case someone wanted to make it.

There are 2 ways to make this detergent, liquid and powder, but they both use the same 3 basic indredients. Also, if you can, whatever utensils you use to make the detergent, it is a good idea to label them and keep them separate so you won't cook with them. I can't remember if I got my untensils at the thrift store or at a yard sale. This detergent will not suds up very much, which also makes this great for front loading washers, but it is still cleaning your clothes. The first time I used it, I put in my detergent and the clothes, but I forgot to close the lid. When I went back and looked at the water it was dark. I thought something had run because of the BORAX of the Washing Soda. Looking more closely, I realized that nothing had run, it was the dirt from our clothes. Y U C K !!!! I know, I know.....stop talking and get on with the directions!
The 3 basic ingredients you need for your detergent are:
1 cup of Grated bar soap - (Fels Naptha, Ivory, Coast, Irish Spring, basically any kind you like...scented or not) you can add a little bit more soap if you want a stronger scent or you can add essential oils to scent it.
(Now you know what to do with all those bars of hotel soap)


1/2 cup BORAX - you can get this at Wal-Mart or almost any grocery store down the detergent aisle

I purchased mine at Wal-Mart for $2.97 for a 4 lb 12oz box.

1/2 cup Super Washing Soda (not to be confused with Baking Soda....they are NOT the same thing) You can find this at Martin's, Kroger's, and Farmer Food's here in VA. You would need to call your local grocery store to see if they carry it. I purchased mine at Martin's for $1.99 for a 3 lb 7oz box.

Other items you will need:
5 gallon bucket or container with a lid (if making the liquid or some other container for the powder)
Grater ( or you can use a food processor, but you need to grate the soap for both kinds )
Cooking Spray or something else to "lightly" grease your grater for easy clean-up later (trust me on this one from personal experience!
Pot - big enough to hold 1/2 gallon (this is needed to dissolve the ingredients)Measuring cup - 1/2 cup size
Mixing spoon with a long handle - to stir your mixture in the bucket
Ok, we are going to make the powder first.

The first thing you need to do is to "lightly" spray your grater with cooking spray to make cleaning the grater easy later on.
Now, grate your bar soap. Grate the whole bar even though you only need 1 cup, as you can save the remaining soap for another batch. Put soap into a bowl or container.

Measure out a 1/2 cup each of BORAX and Super Washing Soda. Put them in the bowl/container with the grated soap.
Stir or shake your 3 ingredients together.

Now if you have a food processor, some have even used a coffee grinder, you can grind it up to make a finer powder. I did that to mine. The picture above is with the soap just grated, the pictures below, is what it looked like before and after I used my Ultimate Chopper. I prefer to make a finer powder.
See the difference? It is just a matter of preference. Now all you need to do is store it in some kind of container.
How much powder do I use? I use 1 tablespoon for a normal load and 2 tablespoons for a large or extra dirty load.

Onward to the liquid~


Follow the same directions for grating and measuring the soap (you do not need to put this in the food processor because you are going to dissolve it in water), BORAX, and Washing Soda only this time keep them separated.

Take your pot and put about 2 quarts of water in and put it over a medium flame till heated.



(you don't have to be EXACT with this recipe. As my mom would say, "It's not rocket science, Laura!" ha ha (LOVE AND MISS YOU, MOM!)
While the weather was warm and we cooked outside, I would make my detergent on the grill using the left over coals. This way I was not wasting the charcoal or using the electricity.
Ok, now we are going to add our ingredients ONE AT A TIIME, stirring and dissolving each one before adding the next one. The mix will get thicker but to what degree all depends on the soap that you use.

1 cup grated soap,



1/2 cup BORAX,


and 1/2 cup Washing Soda




Are you still with me? It's pretty easy, huh? It's okay, we are almost finished!!!
Alright, after those three ingredients are dissolved, turn off the heat and remove pot from burner. Get your bucket/container and put again about 2 quarts of water in it.

I like to use warm water for this part, only because I am ALWAYS FREEZING and if I get my hands in it, it's WARM!

Next, pour your soap mixture into the bucket and stir.
Now add about a gallon of warm water and stir again.






Coming to the home stretch..........................Now all you have to do is put a cover on it and let it sit overnight, however, I have used it right after making it because I waited to long to make more and I really NEEDED to do laundry.



The next day when you remove the lid, there are a few different ways it may look. There is no WRONG way, as again, it all depends on the kind of soap you used. I don't have a picture because mine looked the same as before.


  • It may look just like it did before you put the lid on
  • It may look like nothing but a big blob of gel
  • It may have the look and consistency of egg drop soup
In any case, all you need to do, if it has gelled, is to stir/shake before use.

How much liquid do I use? I use 1/2 cup per normal load and up to a cup for large and extra dirty loads.
Well, there you have it in a nut shell. Homemade laundry detergent. I hope you enjoy making this as much as I do.
