Giving It Another Try

As you know, we have been TRYING to put fertilized eggs under our broody hen and had not been successful in our attempts.  All of them so far had been broken either before they got into the nesting box or shortly after.  

On July 1st we gave it another try . . . . . . . .

we got 8 more eggs from Grace . . .

dated each one . . . . .

 and while momma was out of the nest stretching her legs,

getting some nourishment, and taking a potty break . . . .

we took out the unfertilized eggs one at a time . . . .

and replaced them. . .

with the dated eggs.

As soon as Gena was refreshed and rejuvenated, it was back to work
protecting and keeping her future babies warm!

Unfortunately the next morning, one of her sisters tried to get in with her

and cracked one of the eggs, so we are now down to 7.

As you can see, I changed the dates on my calendar.  On the 11th, we will candle them to determine if there are any peeps inside.  If all goes well, we should have some cute little peeps running around so don't forget to come back and see! 

DID YOU KNOW. . . . .that while setting on their eggs, the momma hen communicates with her babies through noise and can tell how fast or slow they are maturing? This tells her which eggs to rotate and when!
