1. Fill a bowl with enough cold tap water to cover the egg(s). I have a very large bowl, so I am able to check more than one egg at a time.
2. Place egg in water. As you can see in the picture below, I had a little helper! lol
3. If the egg sinks to the bottom, there is not much air inside the shell, and your egg is fresh.
4. If the stands on its point and bobs on the bottom, the air pocket is much larger. This means that the egg is not quite as fresh, but it is still good, but should be used soon.
5. If the egg floats to the top, it needs to be discarded.
6. Repeat with the rest of your eggs
This trick works because egg shells are porous, and overtime, the liquid in the egg evaporates and is replaced by outside air. This is another reason why you should never keep your hens in the same building along with gas cans and the like. I know I don't want to eat eggs that taste like gasoline or other chemicals.
FYI: Did you know that if you want to make egg salad or deviled eggs, using eggs which are a week or so old are easier to peel than very fresh eggs? I can personally vouch for that! lol
Thank you, Laura, for this helpful information!

Great photos! :)
Good Afternoon Laura!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!
I love the pictures that you posted too!!
What a handsome rooster you have.
We had chicks delivered on Mon.
We are not quite ready for them yet...and have a lot of work to do on the barn yet.
Oh well.... by the time they feather out and are able to be outside, the barn should be done.
Just about 6 months later... we should be rolling in the eggs also.
We took about a 2 yr. break from chickens, due to the move, etc...
Have a great night!
Smiles :)

Laura,
ReplyDeleteThis information has come in very handy. Just this week, I was getting ready to boil eggs and put them into a pan of water. One egg floated to the top, and because of you, I knew to get rid of it.
Also, it is good to know that older eggs peel more easily…what a relief.
:) Hope
